'Uneasy...' mixed media on found cardboard. And it's my biggest announcement of all. It's coming up for this blog's one year anniversary - and I know I'm not that great at daily posts (I have managed around 70 in all!)but at the moment my life doesn't allow for too much exciting stuff to happen. When I started this blog my aim was to give myself a focus - to suss out what was important to me in how I create and really boil those things down to find an overall style and way of working that said something about what I am really interested in as an artist.
A year ago I set up my studio at home and told my self to just spend a year finding direction. The day job has been gruelling and my creative mind was jumping around in all directions not knowing where to go and what to do. The network of bloggers out there has remained a daily inspiration and despite my full-time work leaving me exhausted I have managed to produce some work that I feel has grasped what I'm on about and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
So what now?
At the end of the year I told myself I would either carry on in my job and make art work as and when or I would step up my artwork a gear and find alternative work to pay the rent that didn't leave me feeling like I had been run over by a heard of elephants at the end of the day. And this is where the announcement comes in...as of next month I will be stepping down from my role in management to a less demanding role and post xmas I will be working less days a week in order to push my work forward. This is a really big, scarey step! But also very exciting as I'm looking forward to having time to experiment and develop ideas much more...
This week I've been playing around with recording the steps I go through in creating a piece, it's fascinating to see something evolve...the finished piece is above. I love this piece of cardboard that I've worked on here. It's the underside of a heatproof ironing board cover that came from a beautiful old wood ironing board I found in the street. Unfortunately the board itself was past its best and unuseable, however I new this beautiful card would come in handy somewhere...if only my scanner were bigger and you could see the lovely torn edges...I also love the old stains on it...so interesting!
