pinhole drawings...

I've recently been playing with the piles of old photographs I have laying around my studio. I really love some of the accidental scenes and lost souls that they often depict and have combined these images with my slightly obsessive love of making dots, this time in the form of making pinholes in each photograph. Tens or hundreds of tiny pinholes have been punched into each photograph to create an eerie presence...like a ufo or a ghost...whatever you make of it! These small artworks have been created with the intention of them being hung in a window to catch the light and glow...

.....................................................................................................................
a collection of 15 small, individual pinhole drawings on old photographs
- each drawing is on either a vintage or antique photograph

- created to be hung in your window and catch the light

- tens or hundreds of pinholes punched into every drawing

- each comes with its own suction cup with hook and clip for hanging

- signed and dated on the reverse

Visit the Restless Things shop or email to purchase.

I won't be around in this space too much for the next couple of weeks so enjoy the rest of your summer and the ease into autumn wherever you are!

random day...

Thanks for all of your comments this week - they are so appreciated and keep me going when it's just little old me in the studio. It's like having studio mates...

Today all drawing with pencils has stopped and I have been working on a little collection of pinhole drawings like those in yesterday's post. They are so delicate and so much fun! Unfortunately there just isn't enough sunshine today to get any snaps so i'll leave you with some randomness instead as i'm clearing out my camera!

more secret self...

sketch 13th september: my secret self/you can't always be friendly, there just isn't the time...
pencil and gouache on found paper

If anyone's at a loose end you could do me a little favour and try my new 'join the mailing list' doo-dah on the right hand side - I'm just trialing this for the next few weeks and I need to make sure that when you sign up you get a 'welcome' email but I've run out of email accounts to test it out on! If you leave me a comment saying if you get the email or not I'll of course take you off of the list (this isn't a ruse to get people to sign up to it - honest!).

cartoony?

So I read somewhere recently (and I forget where!) that someone thought my work was 'cartoonish' - I was utterly gobsmacked and felt that this comment completely destroyed the essence of what my work seeks to represent! Cartoony? It's not like a cartoon in any way I thought!

But actually, I was thinking about this very thing today as I came across a few old drafts that I had shelved for purely this reason. Too cartoony. I finally got myself rooted at the studio table this afternoon and started piecing together something from my mental drawing board that's been lurking for a while (see above) and I love it and can't wait to flesh it out on some nice paper! But at the same time I've come back to the thought that it looks like a comic strip monster and I feel a little...'meh' about it.

Going back further into the recesses of my mind today I remembered as a child being absolutely obsessed with drawing cartoons (see bottom for an early example, I like that the cats name is 'jink' - I have no idea why?!). I had a book on how to draw cartoon animals and I would spend hours on end drawing these characters.

So I guess I have brought my love of cartoons with me into adulthood. I think it's the simple lines and blocks of color that I love and I'm hoping that sometime soon I will learn to love the 'cartoony' aspect of my work!?

..................................................

It's late in the day but I have finally got a chance to sit and type to you about a little project that I've been working on for the past couple of weeks that is finally out in the open and available in the shop. It's a little book of my sketches! It's something that I've wanted to put out for ages, it's kind of part book, part zine. It's bookish in that I've laid it out very simply like an artists monologue and zineish in that it reminded me of making zines when I was a teenager, sitting on the floor in a pool of paper, laying things out to see what works best and doodling away!

I'm not sure if this is the kind of thing people would like to see in my shop so this is just a very limited edition trial run of something that, if received well, I'd like to continue to put out there periodically. I've really tried to make each one feel personally handcrafted by hand titling/signing the title page as well as drawing on each individual cover.

Whatever the response I've certainly enjoyed making it and learning about bookbinding along the way!

it's that time again...

For my august mix of course! Usually I find myself getting really into individual tracks but this whole mix crept up on me this month and I've found myself playing it over and over and over again! With tracks from Joe Henry, Efterklang, Steve Flanagan, Joan of Arse, Ellen Allien, Diane Cluck, Biosphere, Park Avenue Music, Magnolia Electric Co and Laura Jean. I think this one is my favorite to date. Enjoy!

Ingrid Montoya...

I'm seriously lagging on posting about this beautiful necklace that I was fortunate enough to win in one of the Modish giveaways a month or so ago. I am so into feathers right now! I'm the kind of person who never really wins anything so I like to think this is good karma at work; I give things away and pretty things get given to me. That's a good deal!

Be sure to check out Moa by Ingrid Montoya on Etsy. There are some really delicate, simple pieces of jewellery to be had.

Thank you Ingrid!
