jack

here's a vintage 1950's union jack flag i have at the moment - he's proving to be a tough one to photograph

humbug

the humbug british weather is one of the other things slowing my blogging down - i haven't been able to get anywhere to collect things! i know we british like to have a cry as soon as there is two flakes of snow but it has actually been pretty bad in some places...

season's greetings to you if i don't make it back here before the big day!

still here

...and still soo busy - i never remember to take my camera anywhere with me though - makes me feel all self conscious to get it out in public.

here's some pictures from my holiday, not quite what you were expecting i know, but my mind was just too deep in thought to be distracted by taking snapshots :)

time out

i'm off for my little break as of today, there's just been no time to post as i've been cramming three weeks  of work into one! i'm looking forward to some time with the mister, time to eat, chill out and reflect and will hopefully get around to posting some snaps here as i go along.

fly by

it feels like the weeks are just flying by to me and there's barely time to catch my breath in between! i'm hurtling straight into a crazy week of sorting and organising and listing and preparing for a holiday next week. so. much. to. do.

there's lots of lovely stuff in at the Restless General Store and i've added a new background to my pictures which i think is working really nicely. originally i made this giant board of book pages to photograph clothes in front of. there's a nasty big meter box and wires in the corner where i photograph things and i thought i'd give it a go in place of the off white paper background which i was getting a lot of glare from. so far, i'm liking the change and i like how it ties in with my love for ephemera.

that's all for now. i need a glass of wine. in bed. with a good film.

27th october: slow on the uptake
pencil on book page

notes: i'm starting to get to like the pencil and how these shapes are looking more and more like etchings than drawings. trying to find where to go with shape has been hard going this week. i've spent a long time making quick, almost automatic, pencil sketches in order to find the right shapes to make into finished pieces.

not only do i completely love this track but i just happened upon the video and it's one of the best things i've seen in a while - watch and enjoy!

change

notes: i've never paid too much attention to the humble pencil but i'm familiarizing myself with them and all of their shades. it's a refreshing change.

what on earth?

i've decided to introduce a new and occasional feature dedicated to those items i come across where i just don't really know what they are. i can sometimes hazard a vague guess at what something could be but i thought it might be a good idea to pool our knowledge in this space and see what we can come up with.

part one: the wooden clampy mold thing
i've had this one laying around for a while - have you seen one before? i haven't. the white bit is ceramic. when closed up the whole thing measures about 8 x 4". does it make half of a golf ball or weird shaped biscuits? i'm at a loss so please leave any thoughts you might have!

the chaff

how did get to be thursday already? it's been such a busy week. i haven't had too much stock to sort out for the general store as i've had a few slow weeks at the auction but i do have an almighty amount of stuff coming in at the weekend. it's swings and roundabouts.

one of the by products of buying random lots of stuff at auction is what i like to call 'chaff' - the stuff that just isn't suitable for the general store. i like to keep a finely honed selection in the shop. so roughly twice a month i have a massive clear out of the leftovers and select some oddments to go on ebay. i am not a fan of ebay in any way but it is a means to an end and that is what this week has been all about. it never ceases to amaze me what people will buy!

15th october: hollow
pencil on an old book page

Monday, October 11, 2010

start

11th october: transpire
gouache and typewriter on old mottled book page

notes: it occurred to me when i was making this piece this afternoon that i don't think i've ever said too much about these oval shapes. in my mind they're portals, to where and to what i don't really know but it's interesting to think about.

boxes and boxes

yesterday, i spent the whole day in the workshop sorting and cleaning up goodies for the general store. today begins a new week, a week of drawing and i'm a little apprehensive! i think i'll just throw myself into it and see what happens...

mushroom moments

we went  out for a little walk on the heath this afternoon for a breath of fresh air, a change of scenery and  to gather some twigs. i pretty much forgot about gathering twigs and got a bit obsessed with photographing all of the mushrooms - so many shapes and colors!

props :: one

i thought over the next couple of days i'd share some of my favorite props which i use when styling the photos for RGS. there is a wide range of bits and bobs, some i've picked up recently and others are things that have been with me for years.

the chalkware girl statue in the top photo is one of my recent favorites and to think that i very nearly threw her out! her features have completely worn away, she has no feet and a spiders nest between her knees but i love the strangely mysterious quality she brings to photos.

the natural mat in the bottom photo is my current item of choice, it works so nicely against the bare wood of the table. i have a hard time not using it in every photo.
