what on earth?

i've decided to introduce a new and occasional feature dedicated to those items i come across where i just don't really know what they are. i can sometimes hazard a vague guess at what something could be but i thought it might be a good idea to pool our knowledge in this space and see what we can come up with.

part one: the wooden clampy mold thing
i've had this one laying around for a while - have you seen one before? i haven't. the white bit is ceramic. when closed up the whole thing measures about 8 x 4". does it make half of a golf ball or weird shaped biscuits? i'm at a loss so please leave any thoughts you might have!

Hi Olivia,

I have just discovered your blog via Artists who Blog and I think I may know what on earth that is. I think it's a lime/lemon/orange squeezer. That might not be the technical name for the device, but my in-laws have a strikingly similar tool in their kitchen. They've had it for more than 30 years.

I think that the side without the ceramic might be missing a metal or ceramic insert with holes in it, like a small colander. You place half of a lemon or lime between the two inserts and squeeze the handles together with all your might. The juice drains from the colander piece into your pot or bowl. My in-laws are Middle Eastern and use lime in almost all of their dishes, so their little device is well-loved.

So, that's my answer! And now I'm going to go and take a look at the rest of your lovely blog.

Hmm...perhaps some kind of antiquated ping pong ball holder? I like your idea of presenting seldom seen objets.

hi Christie & Hannah! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to leave comments!

I hadn't thought about it as a juicer - interesting! I'm off to do a bit more research.

Just stumbled upon you somehow! I immediately saw that little wooden thingie as a darning thing. Place the wool item to be darned and gently close the top and it holds the sock/sweater sleeve, whatever, so you can darn more easily.... maybe?
