refrain

27th July: trying to refrain from thinking
ink on book page with found writing

yesterday, i found the perfect studio space and the perfect cottage (with a chicken coop and a summer house and a pond and an outbuilding - whoa there!) in a small bustling town.

today, i can't stop thinking about what is the right thing to do. i am an over-thinker and then some.

morsels

#62.3 - Menomena - Wet and Rusting
Uploaded by lablogotheque

this week i've had the recent menomena album mines on heavy rotation - it's a moody stunner! I was browsing their website this afternoon trying to find some morsels to share in this space and came across this take away show from a few years ago - the little kids just get me every time! hope you enjoy it too.

also, listen :: menomena :: five little rooms (from the album mines)

today, i got sunburn and have had too many big thoughts bounding round my head, it must surely be time for a glass of wine and a chill out in my favorite armchair - cheers!

smooth

23rd july: partial veil
pencil, gouache and burning on book page

notes: thinking about mummies, fingerprints aging and the circle of life. i'm really enjoying working with these simplified portraits/busts. they make me think of folk art carvings or objects that have had their edges smoothed over by the sea. something i've been coming back to in my mind during this weeks drawing is when i visited my nan last week. a year or so ago she lost the ends of some fingers and she keeps one of them in a small wooden box. it was quite an amazing thing to see, it's kind of 'mummified'. i loved the way the skin still held her fingerprints only they seemed to be heavily embossed on the surface.

if you're interested...

...i've set up a separate blog for the restless general store. it's a simple affair that i will mainly be updating as and when i add new finds to the shop. there might be the occasional blurb or photo of a big pile of filthy bric-a-brac to share but mainly i will be keeping it simple as this is my main spot.

moments

torrential rain today and the house has sprung all sorts of leaks. i forgot that the window was open next to my work space and the rain came in and soaked the drawing i was working on! let's hope it dries out ok. hope you're enjoying your day whatever the weather :)

back to it

19th july: infinite drift
ink on book page

notes: slowly but surely the desire to draw is coming back to me and i'm taking things slowly and trying not to demand to much of myself. i'm even enjoying white paint again and about a month ago i thought i was ready to never use white again! i even dug out a tube of black paint in frustration...but that was so wrong.

opening the restless general store has certainly kept me on my toes over the past few weeks with more sales than i ever expected from the outset. thanks to all who have taken a look or even made a purchase. i won't be mentioning it too often in this space, i think it's best to keep the two things separate. it's also helped clear my mind on the drawing front and i'm hoping to really get back to it this week.

i've had a few days away and this is the only picture i have to show for it - jolly poor show! the idea of drawing is looming, i think next week will be the right time to get back to it. have a fab weekend whatever you get up to!

are you local?

here's one of a series of sketches i've been working on, i'm not committing myself to any 'finished' drawings at the moment! i've been working on a small commission today and although i felt apprehensive about making a start on it after a little warm up it felt really good to be drawing.

if you're a local type you might be interested to know that i'll be at norwich lanes street fair this sunday 11-5 pedaling my wares with my glamorous assistant. i'll have a selection of standard size and mini prints, books and original drawings. we'll be somewhere down by the arts centre so do drop by for a browse.

introducing...

so, i'm back to some light blogging this week after my hiatus. i've taken some time to relax, not draw and do some new things.

i felt like i had reached a real moot point with my work a few weeks ago and over analyzing my inability to produce work that i felt had the right quality was leaving my on the verge of anxiety attacks in the studio - yikes!

it dawned on me whilst i was busy trying not to draw that i needed a distraction. to not continually force myself day in and out to produce drawings and most importantly for it to be something that i love almost as equally as my art.

since the beginning of the year and in a bid to live more simply i've been on a mission to get rid of vast amount of 'stuff' from our house. i accumulate things at a rate of knots and we have very little room and almost no storage. i just buy things without knowing why i need them sometimes - they just lure me in. damn you bric-a-brac i just love ya!

and then it dawned on me (it's been a week of dawns) that etsy is a marketplace for not only handmade goods but vintage items too and thusly i have come to open another shop on etsy for vintage items. not only am i able to sell some of my personal collection of what-nots but also indulge myself a little when i'm out thrifting .

without further ado i give you: Restless General Store

the shop is a mix of home decor and household goods alongside paper ephemera, clothing and accessories and the items therein are chosen for my love of well-made and aged objects from materials such as wood, glass, metal, leather and paper.

it's a work in progress but i hope you have the time to stop by for a browse - you never know what you may find!
