the one that got away

8th october: more than you know
gouache on large found cardboard panel

available in the Restless Things shop

notes: i've been reeling of late, i've been kept on my toes by a recent mention on the jealous curator which certainly put a lot of interest my way and gave me a few precious hours of studio time to finish this larger sized piece that's been calling to me for quite a while. i'm hoping for a few weeks in the studio through the christmas period as well to get cracking on some new pieces as the poor shop is starting to look a bit empty!

have you seen these lovely tiles by Claire Loder? 'one swallow' is especially special, it reminds me of the summer. She has a rather wonderful new shop open as well - take a look here.

fair & square

Just a heads up to let european customers know that I have just revised my shipping prices in the restless things shop today - apologies, it's long overdue! When I first started out on etsy some 6 years ago there wasn't an option for adding standard prices for the whole of europe so my shipping prices were just charged as 'everywhere else' and I would refund the difference. If you're in europe you can now see the exact cost of shipping, fair and square.

moments

bank holiday weekend moments: a visitor to the studio, working on some drawings, watching bugs out of the window, hiding from the rain in my dilapidated old shed. how about you?

gather: small batch roasted vegetable chutney

this week some leftovers from my fridge inspired this chutney. i added some rapidly expiring roasted veggies with some fruity sauce to some cheese on toast and decided that a roast veg chutney would be the order of the day! in retrospect i think i would have used more of something else instead of the carrot but it's what i had to hand and it still tastes pretty good.

small batch roasted vegetable chutney

245g red & yellow peppers
300 courgette
210g carrot
255g red & white onion
6 cloves garlic

- chop the veggies into chunks (not too small), drizzle with olive oil and roast until lightly browned with some crispy edges. leave to cool.

in a stainless steel pan mix together:
250g cooking apple (peeled & chopped)
250g green tomatoes (peeled & chopped)
180g mixed dried fruit (with peel)
250g soft brown sugar
300ml white wine (or cider) vinegar

season with:
2 sundried tomatoes
3 sprigs fresh thyme
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground coriander seed
2 tsp mild chilli powder
1/2 tsp salt
40 crunches black pepper

- bring slowly to the boil and whilst it's heating chop up the cooled roasted veg into small pieces and add gradually

- simmer for 2.5-3 hours or until it reaches a consistency you like

- pack into sterilised jars, label and store for 6-8 weeks in a cool place before opening.

enjoy!

burning silk, barely there

21st august: perturbed
burning on antique silk handkerchief

notes: making marks on some different surfaces, so delicate, so awkward and so barely there that it's hard to get some good photos of it!

barren wasteland

i was lucky enough to get an allotment just a few paces from my small back garden, you can just see my house in the middle of this pic! i took it on in early 2012 - the year of torrential rain - and struggled to get on top of it until this year. my budget is tight and I have no spare cash to buy or hire fancy equipment; i've dug this densely weed covered space by hand and have broken 2 forks in the process! i'm now digging the final quarter of the plot which will include getting an overgrown raspberry patch under control. i just have to keep reminding myself that it's very nearly done...

my main plan for next year is to give a lot of room to annual and wild flowers for cutting. progress is underway and my potting area is currently awash with all kinds of young plants waiting to fill this almost barren wasteland!

here's my post with some pics from last year.

gardening seriously keeps me sane, i don't know where i would be without some soil to tend. if you're green fingered and have an outdoor space you'd like to share then feel free to leave a link :)

lost voice

19th august: patience
gouache on salvaged notebook page

notes: feeling like i've lost my voice for pretty much most of the year but now trying to make a concerted effort to get on with it or shelve this whole thing and move on. so, i'm starting simple.

freshly added to the shop today, you can find it here.

caught up

hello out there, what can i say, i've been so caught up with gardening of late there's been barely a moment to spare. so much digging, planting, sowing and harvesting has been done and yet there is always more to do, it's another work in progress.

blog? WHAT BLOG!?

3rd may: tumult
pencil and gouache on book page

available in the shop.

I know - long time, no see! I have a major project on the boil (not art related in any way but creative nonetheless) and I needed a bit of a break from drawing and some me time. Thanks to the kind souls who enquired about my whereabouts. I'll hopefully be back here soon.

i've never known such dark days and haven't been able to take any pics of anything for weeks now. we had one glorious sunny snowy day earlier this week but now it's back to grey days. stay warm wherever you are!

brevity

2nd january: brevity
gouache and typewriting on salvaged notebook page

available in the shop.

notes: another piece from the christmas and new year period. i found this bundle of almost yellow ochre school book paper - which i think i've had stashed away since i was in high school (it had some lesson notes in it which i discarded to use this as a poetry (ha!) notebook, the poetry was discarded and paper kept for a rainy day - it has the most wonderful soft yet grainy texture to it and is a joy to work on with gouache, the brush just glides over the surface.

something i keep coming back to is trying to move my motifs out to the edges of the paper instead of having them hovering in the middle but it was nice to have a shape floating in the middle there to bring the shapes at the periphery together. using my typewriter here again, it's such a great mark making tool and i enjoy incorporating language in terms of symbols or letters into a piece.

have a wonderful weekend :)

new for the new year

1st january - fluctuate
gouache and typewriting on salvaged notebook page

available in the shop.

notes: i've spent some time over the christmas and new year period working on some new pieces. there wasn't much else to do really as the dreary weather kept me inside for most of the time! i've been trying to mix things up a bit to see where it takes me, and with this piece i dug out my typewriter to see what it could add...
