a gentle nod

it's been a funny ol' month. i've had work in and out of the kiln on a number of occasions with nothing of much consequence to report but taking baby steps towards achieving the results i've been after all along. it's a learning curve i guess and i'm not always that good at having much patience for things that take a long time so really getting my head around the ceramic process has been a test!

but finally i feel as though there are some results i feel proud. there are a selection of bowls available in my shop that balance the subtle tones, simplicity and tactility i've been aiming for whilst giving a gentle nod to my work on paper. i hope you have a chance to take a look.

this week, i'm pressing on with teapots...

ceramic odyssey

As you may have guessed of late I have been on something of a ceramic odyssey, it's been refreshing to have my mind challenged by a new medium and it is something I will be exploring over the coming months and hopefully years. I hope it won't put those of you off who have been visiting this space over the years and enjoy my drawings, i haven't stopped drawing altogether but it is long over due for a bit of a rest from that side of things.

As of this morning I have a few ceramic creations available in the shop, a range of mugs with a sgraffito design in cream, biscuit and charcoal grey, do take a look if you have a mo'. There are only 5 to be had and may be the only ones in these/colours designs that I make so be sure to snap one up if they take your fancy!

spring clean/new space

this week has been about making some changes and having a good old clear out. it's been hard over the past few months having pots teetering everywhere and finding the time and space to work in our very small kitchen to actually get anything done. so, after a lot of sorting i've made a small potting studio space back downstairs in what used to be my old studio when we first moved here. it's a very cold north facing room and although i never liked this room much before it is a joy this time around to have a space where i can just leave stuff and come back to it later.

i picked up a used kitchen unit and some cheap shelving and found this wonderful textile piece (for 20p!) to brighten up the empty wall and bob's your uncle.

just the right amount of space for me to get to work...

wreckage

i'm a bit behind with posting about these as they have been out of the kiln for a week already! i made these vessels before the tester bowls in my last post and was feeling rather precious about them as i had laboured long and hard over a detailed sgraffito design in white slip on each of them.

there is a lot to like about these pieces, the speckled clays were lovely to work with and the tiny specks are a pleasing touch, i finally managed to get into making some lovely pinched forms which up until now hadn't been my thing, especially this one that's almost like a cave.

the glaze was my favorite one from the tests I had done, a semi-transparent chun, which was milky and patchy and uneven but unfortunately not thick enough to produce any blue runs. i was hoping for a delicate white on pale cream effect with these but the white slip completely burnt off in the firing leaving behind a very flat sgraffito design which didn't 'pop'. all in all the overall effect is dull and disappointing however i will try and refire a few pieces and see if i can't salvage something from the wreckage! you live and learn...

missing shop

in other news it would appear that there is some kind of 'bug' in my shop at the moment, depending on which link you follow it is either empty or just not there. i haven't managed to get any kind of response from Etsy about this yet! Thanks to a persistent follower for bringing this to my attention.

layers

3rd february: insistent weight
pencil, block printing ink and burning on salvaged hardback book cover with found handwriting

notes: a new piece completed yesterday for a shop update later on this month. my work over the past year or so has become more and more about a selection process and building layers over periods of time. my pile of incomplete pieces is always growing and with each burst of creativity in the studio i select a handful of pieces with initial marks on to see if i might be able to offer a new and pleasing aspect to them. sometimes it works as with yesterday's piece above, with a couple of other pieces put aside, most returned to the 'pile' and one for the bin as it went beyond the point of salvage. subject matter as always is unchanging, the idea of the intangible made definite is constantly alluring and motivates me creatively no end.

bisque (2)

here are some larger items from my second bisque firing including hanging planters and a coffee dripper. i've decided to try out a range of glazes on these, i have some pre-mixed brush on glaze (in white, blue and grey), a pre-blended powder (white) and have mixed 6 of my own glazes in assorted shades of white. perhaps this is too much for a beginner but i'm keen to see the differences in application and finished results between the different types! the glazes are sieved and i'm hoping to get the consistency right tomorrow and start work on some test tiles asap...

i was rudely awakened this morning so here's some bright and early studio pics.

steadily

i'm steadily building a pile of pots which i am desperate to get in the kiln, the cones i need have been out of stock for forever 2 weeks and i'm slowly going a bit mad with just wanting to get on with it already! currently crossing my fingers and toes for getting something on the go this weekend...

in the pipeline

also in the pipeline now I have a kiln is making some tiles for our kitchen refit later in the year. these are so satisfying to make and I can't wait to get some glaze on them. i'm going for a rustic patchwork effect made from 12 different designs all of which will have a simple semi-transparent white glaze. i'm VERY excited to see these finished.

functional

i've been working on a selection of functional items as well as some decorative pieces over the past couple of weeks. a bout of flu straight after christmas set me back a bit but i'm looking forward to hopefully doing my first bisque firing this week!
